When Nathan Freihofer sets his mind to something, he has a way of achieving it. He’d say it’s in his genes, like a personality trait in his family. “We get driven up to and beyond the point of obsessiveness,” says Nathan Freihofer. “And that can be great if you’re channeling in the right direction and applying it to the right kind of goals.”

Tempering the more dangerous edge of that drive, which leads to obsessiveness, has been a significant part of Nathan Freihofer. As someone who spent years of his youth struggling with anorexia, Nathan Freihofer knows just how easily the search for self-improvement can get out of hand.

Now, after years of being well and having a new appreciation for food and exercise, and with a new mission to further his well-being and help others find theirs, Nathan Freihofer is in a unique position to speak about the importance of having the right mental attitude to achieving goals.

It starts with recognizing the reasons for pursuing fitness goals. “Some people will get into fitness and weightlifting because they want to achieve a certain look, and that’s fine,” he explains. “For me, looking like I do isn’t a goal. It’s a side effect of pursuing my goals. I mostly train because it makes me feel good and healthy.”

Personal fulfillment is as good a reason as any to take up fitness, as is doing it for health benefits. A positive mental attitude would include affirmations and boosting one’s spirits every step of the journey towards achieving a goal. It recognizes that the goal gets closer with every effort someone invests in reaching it.

“It’s also learning to enjoy the process,” says Nathan Freihofer. “I enjoy setting a goal and reaching it, but I also like everything in between the two – that’s the stuff that makes me feel good.” That’s why he advocated learning to love the path as a crucial positive mental attitude to help people achieve their fitness goals. It’s easiest if they love all of it.

A positive mental attitude could also extend enough to include flexibility in reaching goals. Being obsessive doesn’t always work out well, nor is being too strict with scheduling. Few people have the privilege of being able to center their lives around their fitness journey, so it’s reasonable that sometimes life might throw a wrench into the plans and mess them up.

“I’ll skip training days sometimes when life happens, and other things that are higher on my list of priorities come up,” Nathan Freihofer says. “I’m fine with that. Fitness has been a great part of my life and my recovery from the eating disorder, and I will not forget that if I have to spend a couple of days doing something else. There’s no pressure. There’s only doing what I love to do. That’s a positive
