Expressing his gratitude, Khalili shares his excitement about premiering ‘Day9’ at the renowned LA Shorts festival, which holds Oscar-qualifying status. He reflects on the challenges of filming the short during the global pandemic, when uncertainties prevailed and people were confined to their homes, stating that being able to finally share his work with a live audience in his hometown adds an extra special touch to the premiere.

Khalili further explains that ‘Day9’ explores the reality of human beliefs and the self-imposed influences that shape our lives. The film delves into the struggles, sacrifices, mistakes, and choices we make, all seemingly keeping our hopes and dreams just out of reach. Yet, the question remains whether we are willing to admit that it is a matter of choice.

With an illustrious career in filmmaking, Dastan Khalili embarked on his journey in 1995 after earning a Bachelor of Arts from the Pomona University Theater Academy. His directorial debut, the feature film ‘Insomnia Manica,’ received critical acclaim, winning Best Feature and Best Director at the NYC Independent Film Festival in 2005. Khalili’s documentary ‘Earth Turns To Gold’ also garnered recognition, winning Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Director at NYCIFF 2010. He continued to make his mark in the industry, earning the title of Best Environmental Documentary Director at the New York Film Festival in 2011 for his film ‘Making Of A Dream.’ In 2022, his martial arts drama ‘The Way’ gained widespread acclaim and was released on major streaming platforms by Gravitas Ventures.

The cast of ‘Day9’ features talented actors, including Charles Maze (known for ‘Among Thieves’ and ‘General Hospital’), Will Laupardus (‘Storage Wars’), Kelcey Watson (‘Snowfall’), Eric McIntire (‘One Tree Hill’ and ‘Spartacus’), and Johanna Watts (‘Bullet Train’ and ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’).

LA Shorts International Film Festival holds a prestigious position as one of the largest and most respected short film festivals globally. It is accredited by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (OSCAR®), the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (ACCT Canadian Screen Awards), and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain (GOYA AWARDS). The festival boasts an impressive record, with 66 LA Shorts filmmakers receiving Academy Award® nominations, and 17 of them going on to win the Oscar. As the longest-running short film festival in Los Angeles, it screens over 300 films and attracts 10,000 attendees annually, including industry professionals and emerging independent filmmakers.
