Below are some excerpts from the interview.
Multi-Award Winning Artist – “Michelle Ayers”
CM: Michelle, your ability to seamlessly blend in Gospel, House and Soul music is simply astonishing. How did you get so versatile as a musician?
MA: Well, I find that Gospel, House and Soul are very similar. Nothing really changed with the way that I sing. Only the music changes a little. House Music is generally a lot faster; Gospel music can be at any tempo and Soul Music simply comes from the Soul with genuine expressions. On that note, it was not complicated at all.
CM: Still on the subject of versatility, it is important to note that you are more than just an artist. You are a decorated TV & Radio show host, Entrepreneur, PR Executive and a Philanthropist among many other things. How do you balance it all?
MA: Having balance can be complicated sometimes, however, when it comes to music and helping people, I never feel like I’m working, and I really enjoy what I do. I find myself up late at night and sometimes up in the wee hours of the morning completing projects. I’m truly driven by passion and determination. Although it’s a little different when I am operating my Insurance Agency but still, I get a burst of energy when I’m able to assist my customers. I truly love what I do.
CM: At what stage did you realize that you could actually become a successful professional musician?
MA: That’s a great question Charles. I never thought about it at all. I am genuinely just being who I am and success followed. I started singing at the age of 3 and playing the piano at the age of 5. God put this in me and I’m just allowing him to work through me. I never thought about success at all – success found me.
CM: Your music career has truly withstood the test of time. How have you managed to retain the same level of musical creativity and authenticity for over 3 decades?
MA: Awwww thanks so much Charles. I stand in humility. Honestly speaking, I don’t know who I would be without Music. I find myself always in the midst of extremely talented people young and old. That really keeps me from being stuck in a time warp. Collaborating with other great artists keeps me moving forward with creativity. I am looking forward to the next dimension. I’m excited about creating even more music in decades to come.
CM: Most of your songs become instant classics. My personal favorite is definitely “FAST STEPPIN”. Kindly give us some insight into the creative thought process that went into creating this masterpiece?
MA: I was stuck in the house during the pandemic after also having the COVID-19 virus 2 times, I was really challenged to get my normal breathing pattern back. I was very sluggish, easily tired and out of breath. All I could think of was being able to get back on my feet. Not only do I love singing, I also love dancing just as much. When Ace Mungin the Owner of Acebeat Music Record Label sent me the track it motivated me to write about dancing and working out. That’s what motivated the lyrics. Shawn “Morpheus” Waters added his touch of collaboration when I was recording the vocals at his recording studio “Matrix Musix” and the magic all came together. I enjoyed every moment of it.
CM: It’s a known fact that success is often preceded by challenges. What are some of the biggest obstacles you had to overcome to become the star you are today?
MA: Wow Charles, another great question. Although I love what I do I was challenged to incorporate my business skills. I had to sometimes work while trying to build my music career. It was very hard because I had children and a household to run. I was burning the candle on both ends just to make ends meet. Still today it is very challenging because the industry has changed drastically. I had to dive in and learn!! Yes, with technology always updating, it can be very challenging to keep up with all the new changes. Not only that, but I also have to keep recreating myself. Now that I am older it’s really a challenge to stay in shape and keep my voice healthy. I suffer with allergies – now living in the South it’s very hard making sure I have the proper medication to combat the issue without it damaging my vocal ability.
CM: Thanks for the interview Michelle. You have the last word. What message would you like to leave with our readers?
MA: Never give up! Although it can be extremely challenging, never and I repeat, never give up on your dreams!!! Pray, stay focused and keep moving forward! I love you all and stay blessed.
