0The Cranberries’ Fergal Lawler & Noel Hogan On Reissuing “No Need To Argue,” Plans & More
Originally released in 1994, No Need To Argue was the biggest-selling album of The Cranberries — a quartet featuring singer Dolores O’Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler — with global sales in excess of 17 million. No Need To Argue notably contained the band’s most commercially-successful single “Zombie,” the music video of which since viewed over 1 billion times on YouTube, making The Cranberries the only Irish band to pass this milestone.
On November 13, 2020, expanded 2CD and digital versions of No Need To Argue will be released via the Universal Music Group, as featuring a remaster of the album and 3 B-sides: “Away,” “I Don’t Need,” and “So Cold In Ireland,” all from the original tapes of the album sessions. Also included are 19 previously-unreleased tracks, including 2 songs not officially released in any format: “Yesterday’s Gone” (recorded unplugged for MTV in New York in 1995) and a demo of “Serious” (which until now has only existed as a low quality live bootleg on YouTube). The 2CD edition features previously-unseen photographs taken from the album photo sessions, while the expanded 2LP edition features the remastered album, plus 3 B-sides and extra tracks “Yesterday’s Gone” and a cover of The Carpenters’ “(They Long To Be) Close To You.” Both the 2LP and the 2CD sets include a 5,000-word essay on the history of the album written by the band’s archivist Eoin Devereux, who previously wrote the sleeve notes for the reissue of The Cranberries’ acclaimed debut 1991 EP Uncertain.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler via Zoom on October 19, 2020, as embedded below. We spoke about the forthcoming reissue of No Need The Argue, future plans for the band, life during COVID-19 and plenty more.
