Who Is Terrell Mackey – Rising R&B Sensation

Who is Terrell Mackey?

Terrell Mackey is a creative and charismatic visionary with grit & perseverance that only the inner city can provide.

I like to describe your sound as a cross between Raphael Saadiq and Ginuwine, but what two artists would you compare your sound to?

I like that thought as Ginuwine is def one of the inspirations to my sound.

Whenever I’m asked this question I like to shape it as “who are the artists I’d love to go on tour with?”

That would be Masaego, Anderson Paak, Don Toliver, Childish Gambino, Xavier Omar, Brent Faiyaz, Miguel & The Weeknd to name a few.

What do you want people to take away from your music?

I want them to walk away with many thoughts & emotions. Kinda like experiencing a rollercoaster with unpredictable weather. I love a song that builds & transforms so like a climbing coaster you get to the turn-up & you enjoy all of the changes in the ride til completion. Replay value is a must so at a second listen you understand the peaks & valleys of it even more and are able to grow an appreciation for it. Ultimately you leave the ride refreshed that it was something familiar but new at the same time.

As a new artist with no support, your single  Annie got a nice reception? What was your vision with that particular sound? What did you want to convey with the visual?

Thanks! It’s been a long road of studying how to market myself and taking the lessons along the way to help it grow. My vision with this sound came after going to Rolling Loud Miami in 2019. I went to study the reactions of the people to specific song’s tempos & patterns. I also saw Travis Scott, he was headlining & killed his set in the middle of a downpour it was one of the best concerts I ever been to. I found the beat on YouTube & Annie was a freestyle I made the night after Rolling Loud. It wasn’t until I saw the natural reception that I doubled down on promo to keep engagement strong.

With the visual, I always wanted to pay homage to Michael considering the Annie line was inspired by him. I wanted to have a dramatic element to my video & through the quarantine with the social injustices Black Americans have endured by the state, I felt the desire to show solidarity through my art to make it clear that I stand in the place I always have stood in & that’s with the people.

How do you see yourself playing a role in the R&B scene in this upcoming year?

In this upcoming year, I have a strong intention of releasing music that makes women feel good, sexy, adored & protected. Most of my releases in the past year have been in a way journal entries about specific moments in my life so its me thinking out loud from my perspective. Now I want to speak to women & be a voice that brings good vibes to them whenever my music is played.

Has COVID-19 helped to put you in position or has it hindered your progress?

It’s been a double-edged sword, to be honest. While the world was suffering & we were losing a lot of lives to covid. Sitting still really made me go inward & in that space, I really was able to be transparent with myself & hone in on what I’m doing with my content & what my plans are for the future. Living in NYC makes it really hard to stop & standstill but covid help me recalibrate a lot of things in my career & push forward.

What’s new on your timeline for releases, content, etc to close out 2020?

Luckily before quarantine, I built my studio right before we shut down. I recorded enough music at home to make several albums. Once things opened back up I filmed a lot of new content as well so as far as a release it’s all TBD at the moment but It’ll be sooner than later.
