Who Is Grand National?

Grand National is a new find for us but the breezy Oklahoma City emcee is a fresh embodiment of the confident, gangster-with-sophistication spirit found in the music of forerunners like Jay Z, André 3000, Pimp C, and Nipsey Hussle. Like the namesake muscle car, National bypasses the gimmicks of competitors in favor of class and performance.

The Hype Magazine got Grand National to weigh in on a few things

From the outside looking in, who is Grand National?

Grand National is an artist who creates using all forms of art.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

I was in Maryland in 2011 and 2012 and I kept finding myself in these situations where I ended up in the studio with people rapping. Then when I went to NY for the first time and I just had this moment where I was like if I’m going to do it then I’m going to do it right.

What do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to be inspired. I’m a creative from Oklahoma City. I want insiders to listen to my music and not imitate my sound but mimic my passion and my attention to detail. I strive for excellence with each verse, song, and project. I’m intentional with my music. I want outsiders (outside OKC) to be introduced to a way a life that they didn’t know existed. Once the introduction is made I know they will love it and come back for more.

Tell us about your current project.

Stacc-A-Dolla represents my evolution from an Oklahoma artist to the national recording artist that I’m striving to be. This album is basically saying no more handouts. None given or expected. I’ve dedicated too much money, time, and energy to my music to not progress. This project is about progression.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you as an artist?

My song “Sun Down” represents the overall theme of the Stacc-A-Dolla project. If listeners want to understand Grand National the artist and how I got here, that’s the song they should listen to. If they’re looking for a song that represents my vibe and my tribe then “Day Ones” from my El Camino Theory project would be my suggestion.

Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music…

In 2020 I started my clothing line Cash Only. The concept was originally for a music project but it turned into a clothing line. I’m also an independent filmmaker with Devoted Media Group. We’ve been releasing web series, short films, and feature films since 2015. I’m a lifestyle photographer who’s covered hip hop shows, King of the Streets car show, and the grand opening of The Marathon Clothing Store.

Keep up with all things Grand National
