Ron Funches On His New Film “Golden Arm,” Future Career Goals, All Elite Wrestling & More

In the new film Golden Arm — due out in theaters and via digital outlets on April 30, 2021, thanks to acclaimed film distributor Utopia — nice girl baker Melanie must trade whisks for barbells as she trains to face off with the reigning Women’s Arm Wrestling Championship champ. Directed by Maureen Bharoocha and written by Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly, the ensemble cast of Golden Arm includes Mary Holland, Betsy Sodaro, Olivia Stambouliah, Eugene Cordero, Aparna Nancherla, Dawn Luebbe, Ron Funches, Ahmed Bharoocha, Dot-Marie Jones and Kate Flannery.

The aforementioned Ron Funches is difficult to pigeon-hole as an entertainer, Funches has worked on network sit-coms (e.g. Undateable), sketch shows Kroll Show, Drunk History), animated programs (e.g. Trolls: TrollsTopia, Harley Quinn), dramas (e.g. Room 104, Transparent), reality programming (e.g. Chopped 420… Yet Funches is also a top-level stand-up comic with a huge following as both a podcaster and Twitch personality. In turn, Golden Arm is just one of his current projects to speak of.

On April 22, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ron Funches via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Golden Arm, we spoke about Funches’ life and career goals, his wrestling fandom, and future projects of his. More on Funches and his Gettin’ Better podcast is online here and here, while more about Golden Arm can be found here and here; the film can now be pre-ordered via Apple here.
