Garrick Bernard On Freeform’s “Single Drunk Female,” Writing For Hulu’s “Solar Opposites,” Stand-Up, Career Goals & More

Single Drunk Female is an acclaimed series wrapping its first season on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at 10:00 PM EST/PST on Freeform. The show — which also airs on Hulu, with new episodes hitting one day after the Freeform premiere — is centered around 20-something alcoholic Samantha Fink (played by Sofia Black-D’Elia of The Mick). After a public flame-out at a New York media company, Fink must seize the only chance she has to sober up and avoid jail time, which entails moving back home with her overbearing mother Carol (played by Ally Sheedy). Back in Greater Boston, Fink restarts her life, working at a grocery store while surrounded by all of the triggers that made her drink in the first place. Confronted with remnants of her old life, including run-ins with her perfect former best friend, who is now dating her ex, Fink sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best self.

Single Drunk Female stars the earlier-named Sofia Black-D’Elia and Ally Sheedy, plus Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington, and Garrick Bernard. The series comes from 20th Television and is written and created by Simone Finch (The Connors), who executive produces along with Jenni Konner (Girls, Camping), Daisy Gardner (Silicon Valley, The Goldbergs), Phil Traill (Good Girls), Nora Silver and Leslye Headland. Headland (Russian Doll, Star Wars: The Acolyte) directed the pilot. Simply put, Single Drunk Female is one of my favorite recent television discoveries, as it manages to be alternately funny, touching, smart, topical, and universal as some of its characters battle addiction.

On March 2, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with the aforementioned Garrick Bernard, who plays James on the show. Without giving too much away, James is one of the show’s more likable characters, and someone who always makes the scene he is more interesting. Bernard is also a stand-up comic and a writer for a variety of projects, recently working on the animated Hulu series Solar Opposites.
