In New Season of “The Method,” MTV News’ Dometi Pongo Connects With Grammy-Nominated Songwriter and Producer Jenna Andrews

MTV News is kicking off a new season of the digital series “The Method,” with two new episodes hosted by MTV News correspondent Dometi Pongo, featuring sit downs with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Jenna Andrews and rapper Saweetie.

“The Method” gives fans an intimate look into the creative approach of those who played a role in bringing to life the biggest songs and videos of the year, and includes influential artists, songwriters, producers, and music video directors. “The Method” premiered Friday, March 25th (Jenna Andrews) with a second episode dropping Friday, April 1st (Saweetie) on the MTV News YouTube channel and across all MTV and MTV News social channels.

Dometi Pongo starts off the season by sitting down with Jenna Andrews, to discuss her career beginnings as a solo artist, writing for and working with BTS, and the unique style that sets her apart from the rest.

Highlights

On Finding Solace In Songwriting:

  • Jenna Andrews: “To me, songwriting is very much like developing a friendship, or like a relationship. It’s like dating. Right? …As soon as you get to a place of creativity, it’s almost like this universe drops on you. And you’re like, oh my god, I just went into this different place. And I feel that, and I write lyrics. I’m like, how did I even think of that? …I really believe that it’s an anointed feeling. It’s just something that – I feel like it’s a gift. It really feels like it’s a gift.”

On Working with BTS:

  • Jenna Andrews: “There were probably 50 rewrites of “Butter” once “Butter” existed. You know what I mean? But there were five other versions where the lyrics were totally different. Basically, one night Ron Perry was like, “We need something like ‘Smooth Criminal.'” And like, I just was like, smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover. And that’s when we were like, OK, this is the song. We landed on it. We sent it to them. They loved it. And then RM came in with the fire rap. And actually, the original version that we did didn’t have the rap section at the end. And that was all RM’s idea. And so we were like, oh my god, this is so good. And it’s also cool, ’cause it goes through so many hills and valleys. Like, it gives you a little bit of everything, I think.”

On Her Legacy:

  • Jenna Andrews: “I think that I want my legacy to have the ability to influence other women in a way that I feel like will actually make change. I always believed that it’s a journey, right? It’s like, I feel like you always continue to get better. The minute you’re like, “Oh, I’ve arrived” is when you’re checked out, in my opinion. I want people to look back and be like, she never gave up. And she had obviously things that she battled with but found ways to make it work. And I think obviously you want the music to be the legacy. You want people to look back at your music and listen to it for years to come. I mean, that’s obvious, but I think beyond that, I wanna be able to empower future women.”
