Conversation Highlights

On writing “ICU” and her favorite line

  • “‘ICU’ really fell into my lap, I feel, because I was so surprised… what I ended up doing that day in the studio… I heard this track by Camper, and I could not skip it. Then I had to get really vulnerable and tell this story that I feel like people can relate to: when you love someone and they didn’t do anything wrong to you but you guys are just wrong for each other. I think my favorite line is the first line ‘something about your hands on my body’ because I just feel like it snaps people’s attention… I feel like it gives me a southern twang. It reminds me where I’m from and it surprised people that I could go that low. It is just a really good line to me. It’s really solid.”

On her inspiration for “Double Back” and on the right time listen to it

  • “When I heard the sample of ‘SWV’, I was just so inspired because I do feel like a lot of my music pays a lot of homage to the 90’s and to the Brandy’s and the Aaliyah’s, Destiny’s Child – they are the women that I look up to… For me, ‘Double Back’ is one of the best songs to get my makeup done to or to do my makeup to… I like to play music during times of my day so I feel like that’s a good ‘let’s get this day going/ let’s do this’.”

On a song that reminds her of her childhood

  • “A song that reminds me of my Childhood is ‘Cinderella’ by The Cheetah Girls – the girl power anthem. I was the biggest Cheetah Girls fan. That was my first concert ever actually and I thought they asked me to come up on stage, but my mom said no.”
