The Hype Magazine’s Life & Style correspondent, Charles Myambo (CM) had an interview with Stevie Knight (SK). Below are some excerpts from the interview.

Decorated Influencer – “Stevie Knight”

CM: Over the past few years, you have established yourself as one of the best when it comes to music reviews or reaction videos. Could you kindly walk us through that journey?

SK: I really appreciate that, there are a lot of dope content creators in my lane who are all killing it that I’m still trying to catch up to. It has been a journey though; you picked the perfect word. It’s been a ride for sure, an unexpected one at that. I’ve always loved hip hop; I love the bars! I’ve always been a regular watcher of freestyles on YouTube like Funk Flex, Sway in the Morning, La Leakers, etc. pretty much all the platforms big and small. I’ve been a huge battle rap fan for as long as I can remember. I’ve been watching that stuff since “SMACK DVD”, but I watched all the battle rap leagues, that’s pretty much all I watched on YouTube back then. I eventually came across Youtubers reacting to freestyles and hip hop songs though, a lot of whom I was not impressed with at the time and knew I could do better so I started my own channel for sh#ts and giggles and Boom here we are.

CM: The YouTube industry, specifically the music review industry, is quite saturated. How did you manage to stand out in such a competitive field?

SK: I’ve come to learn that people really appreciate my genuineness and authenticity.  I’m not fake and my audience can see that. I’m told that a lot. I say what I think or feel regardless of how I think it will be received and thinking about it now I can see why others would choose not to do that with all the censorship going on. It can be very difficult simply expressing a unique independent thought these days, but that’s an entirely different conversation. But yeah, people connect with what’s real to them and it seems that I’m real to a lot of people. My subs are the best though, they rock with me tough! I also know what initially got me here too. The appeal was viewers watching me review and react to things that were foreign to me. Initially, I reacted to things I wanted to, but I allowed my subscribers to dictate the path of my channel which led me to artists I was unfamiliar with like Lil Dicky, NF and of course Eminem. Lots of fans of these artists want to see new listeners’ reactions to them. Eminem for example, I knew of him before YouTube of course but I didn’t know him like that, and fans loved watching my journey being exposed and becoming a fan, especially since I’m not a “traditional” one and I love hip hop so much.

CM: What exactly ignited your passion for music?

SK: I’m just a fan of hip hop, I love and admire the creativity of it. I love the competitiveness, the aggression, the history behind it, I just love bars man. I love listening to the expression of ideas in the various ways artists can deliver them especially when I can relate to what they’re saying.

CM: Before all this streaming success materialized for you, what were you doing professionally and why change?

SK: Man, I hated my profession before this, so much so that I don’t even wanna tell you what I was doing. But I can definitely thank my previous employer for pushing me to go so hard for this when I saw the opportunity to get out.

CM: When Eminem’s Kamikaze album came out, I remember binge watching all your reaction videos. At that point, you only had a few thousand subscribers. What were your expectations for your channel back then in 2018?

SK: I had no expectations, it was all for fun and turned into this, the shit is crazy!

CM: I am keen to know about some of the hurdles you encountered before and after you became a mainstream YouTube content creator. Kindly fill us in.

SK: I really had no hurdles initially because there were no expectations, I was just grateful for the things that were happening for me. I hadn’t really seen any hurdles until I started my other channel in 2021, “Knight Talk”. That’s where the shit really goes down. I’ve been censored and shadow banned a few times for shedding light on the crazy things that go on in this world. That channel is exploding as we speak, it’s actually growing faster than the music channel. But yeah, starting that channel has allowed me to see how f#cked the world really is.

CM: Stevie, you certainly have a profound gift and you are very charismatic. Do you have aspirations to one day work with a TV network or do you prefer remaining independent and why?

SK: Man, I have aspirations to do whatever there is to do for me out there and if that includes being one network one day I’m definitely down. I want to take advantage of it all, every opportunity that comes my way.
