IMPRINT Review | Middle Kids did not disappoint a sold out 170 Russell on their fifth show of the Real Thing tour in Melbourne, Australia

Wednesday the 24th of April brought adoring fans from far and wide to fill 170 Russell with excitement. My favourite thing during the build up to the show was easily the passion in the voices and the twinkle in the eyes of fans as they enthused about Hannah Cameron, Tim Fitz and Harry Day. The eager queue of loyal supporters gave me great hope for the show to come.

Opening the night was Wollongong born, Melbourne-based, indie singer-songwriter Tyne-James Organ. With a voice sounding like the perfect combination of the raw, husky and beautiful voice of Matt Corby and the melodic, crisp tone of Lewis Watson, Organ had the entire room eagerly listening to every word. Opening his heart up right there on stage, Tyne performed his powerful tribute song to his late father, “Watch You Go” and the honest, vulnerable emotions of pain in his voice were easy to recognise. Tyne is certainly making waves in the Australian music industry and his performance on Wednesday was a great indication of why.

With LED light bars lining the stage floor and chains of white paper flowers hanging from the roof, the scene was set beautifully as Middle Kids took to stage. The Sydney trio began their set with 2017 track “Never Start” from their self-titled EP, before making their way through popular crowd favourites including “Salt Eyes”, and the third track from their debut album Lost Friends, “Edge Of Town”. Each and every song had the room swaying and dancing along with Hannah, who looked like she was having the time of her life, the way I believe performers should look while doing what they love. With electric energy and stunning indie/folk/pop vocals, Hannah won the crowd over, which she took even further as she got up close and personal with them to throw a bunch of red roses to the lucky fans within the sea of hands reaching for them.

Middle Kids unfortunately have had to cancel their shows in Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand as Hannah has lost her voice after falling ill. Those who had bought tickets have been assured refunds and another show soon, but the majority of responses to the news from these loving fans have been well wishes for Hannah. It is clear that this trio of talented musicians have earned a dedicated fan-base with their love of their craft. Cameron enthused to the crowd how much Middle Kids “really believe in the power of music” and with this attitude and passion so visibly alive in this band I look forward to seeing what they do next.
