Live Session: Funnyman Guy Torry talks documentary, cookbook and gives relationship tips
Funnyman Guy Torry has a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG history in the comedy game and could be considered a door opener for many Black Comics. In 1995, Guy created and hosted a successful weekly comedy show called Phat Tuesdays at the world famous epicenter of comedy in America, The Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. That move and the success of the branded room which Torry personally oversaw, is equivalent to Sidney Poitier winning his Oscar. Some of comedy’s most recognizable faces launched from the Phat Tuesday Stage at The Comedy Store during its 10 year run under Torry…the VERY short list includes Kat Williams and Chris Tucker. Until Torry’s Phat Tuesday, Black comedy had no hold on mainstream comedy clubs…he changed all that.
The Hype Magazine caught up with Guy just before he was to head out for an appearance in Louisville, KY at The Laughing Derby Comedy Club on October 5th. We talked about his upcoming documentary, “Phat Tuesdays: The Untold Story,” and of course his cookbook who’s title is so obvious, I’m going to make you listen to the interview to get that! There was also some hint of an upcoming comedy album…yup it was a great conversation, he was funny, informative and inspirational.
Guy also gave me a great relationship tip…”Want to make your lady loosen up, take her to a comedy show…you can go to a movie anytime.” Hey Guy…It worked!!! Comedy is the new panny droppa!!!
