Google Celebrates Hip-Hop All Year

Leading the pack, Google Pixel has announced its new partnerships and commitments that will drive its celebration of hip-hop throughout the year, with a focus on elevating female voices and connecting fans with the genre’s past, present, and future, including:

  • A partnership with Live Nation, the world’s leading live entertainment company, and media and entertainment company Mass Appeal to bring 50 years of hip-hop to life for fans by telling its story across live events, original content, artist partnerships, and immersive experiences.

    • As the official and exclusive handset original equipment manufacturer (Handset OEM) of the Hip Hop 50 trademark, Pixel will create new digital and social creative and exclusive merchandise featuring the official logo to be released later this year.

  • A $100K contribution to Femme it Forward’s Next Gem Femme mentorship program. A portion of the funds will go toward five scholarships supporting female students pursuing careers in the entertainment business. Mentees will also have the opportunity to connect with Google employees at a networking event hosted at Google offices.

  • Launching a new content series with Mass Appeal featuring five female Hip-Hop artists on the rise who will remake a classic hip-hop record and album art that will be photographed on Pixel by up-and-coming female photographers. The first episode will launch in April, with a new song and cover art debuting each month through August.

Pixel’s ode to Hip Hop 50 is already underway:

  • Earlier this month at Rolling Loud California, Pixel launched an interactive exhibit for fans to experience the past, present, and future of hip-hop through the lens of Pixel technology and features:

    • Fans graced the cover of classic hip-hop albums, with a photographer on-hand to take their picture using Pixel’s Real Tone technology. The images were used to create a digital and in-person gallery wall of album covers that rotated between images to celebrate fans’ different skin tones.

    • To recognize hip-hop’s global influence and its rising artists around the world, fans used Live Translate to translate lyrics and learn more about these international hip-hop stars.

    • Throughout the year, versions of this experience tailored to the regional styles of hip-hip will be available to fans at Rolling Loud Miami, Dreamville Festival, Roots Picnic, The Governors Ball, and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Images of the experience are below and here and can be credited to Pamela Garcia-Aguirre.

  • Ongoing collaboration with hip-hop visionary Slick Rick, the inaugural mentor member of the #YouTubeBlack Voices Artist Class of 2022. Pixel products will be incorporated into his upcoming visual album. We partnered during Grammys, Super Bowl, and NBA All-Star Weekend to create content on Pixel for other forthcoming projects he’ll release this year.
